The $50 Winner and last weeks Coolest Gadget…
Last weeks coolest gadget again had a runaway winner (45% of the votes), the iRing (another podium finish for Gaj It)), the coolest way to control your iPod. The iRing’s functionality is every bit as cool as the ipod’s. To adjust the volume, you simply need to slide your finger across the touch sensitive surface of the ring. To play or pause songs, just tap the apple icon on the ring and to skip tracks you need only touch on either side of the icon depending on which direction you want to go As cool as the iRing is, it is only a concept which did give it a bit of an unfair advantage in last weeks contest so we might be changing the rulea a little bit for next week. …. Nurian Avatar F1 has a lot inside
You’ve got to like the look of the Nurian Avatar F1.  Of course, looks are not everything from this piece of South Korean technology.  The Avatar F1 is kind of a PMP, MID, and UMPC all in one.  This Avatar comes packed with an Alchemy AU1250 600MHz processor, is powered by a Windows CE 5.0 Core, and has a 30GB hard drive.  The Avatar F1 can play back many file formats to include MPEG1/2/4, DivX, Xvid, WMV, OGG and of course MP3’s.  It also allows the user to tune into mobile TV broadcasts and has output video with a TV out component dongle.  The screen is a 4.3-inch WQVGA display that is a complete touchscreen of 480 x 272 resolution. Time to end the rumors; Canon unveils the new EOS 50D DSLR
Well, we can all rest easy now as our beloved Canon has officially announced the EOS 50D. And with the official specs and features, I’m sure our fellow Gadgetell writer Jodie would be glad to know that the 50D will definitely not disappoint her again. Most of the specs we mentioned to you yesterday are pretty much accurate as far as the official Canon announcement goes. The EOS 50D would have a 15.1-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 image processor, ISO range between 100-12800, multiple level noise reduction during high-speed shooting, peripheral illumination correction, 14-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion, 6.3 frames per second (fps) shooting, auto lighting optimizer, a viewfinder with 0.95x magnification, and an autofocus system which is similar to the EOS 40D’s AF system. Navigon announces new 7200T GPS with 4.3-inch display
Navigon has recently shown off their new GPS, the 7200T. In efforts to make this their best GPS thus far, they have added a few new features including a revamped OS. Within the new OS comes real time traffic updates, Reality View Pro, and Landmark View 3D. The traffic updates are free using the FM tuner tuned to Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network. Usually, real time traffic updates cost monthly subscriptions. The other cool feature is the Landmark View 3D, which shows a 3D view of landmarks in the area. In addition, the 7200T sports the aforementioned 4.3-inch touchscreen, with a 16:9 display, 2GB of internal storage, SiRF GRF3i+GPS chip, microSD expansion, 64MB of RAM, and running on a Centrality Titan I 600MHz processor. Wii Balance Board used to control Roomba… for reasons unknown
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 8:02AM For Roomba hacking extraordinaire longjie0723, it’s just another day in the office. Grasping for one more way to control the circular vacuum with something video game-related, he keyed in on the Wii Balance Board. Granted, he’s already had success controlling the Roomba with a Wiimote, so we assume that whipping this one up was a lesson in simplicity. We still can’t really understand why this here hack is necessary, but unlike decisions made by publicly traded companies, independent DIYers don’t need no logic to get their mod on. $249 Kindle 2.0 significantly thinner and Frog stylish?
by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 5:41AM var Like the 1st generation Kindle unearthed by Engadget snoops way back in September of 2006, Amazon’s having a tough time keeping the lid on its 2nd generation e-book reader. Seems everyone and his analyst brother is confirming a new, larger screened collegiate reader and at least one other variation, presumably the Kindle 2.0. Now BusinessWeek steps up and “confirms” the collegiate reader while claiming knowledge of a new 2.0 base model that, “is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances,” such as the placement of those massive page forward / back buttons which can trigger inadvertent page changes. Nokia N79, N85 to appear in UK “soon”
The United Kingdom will have two new phones from Nokia sometime in the next month, the N79 and N85.  Some sources indicate that these phones will launch as early has August 26.  The N79 is meant to replace the N78, and has features such as a 5-megapixel camera and dual-LED based flash.  Other features include 3G connectivity, a microSDHC memory card slot, Wi-Fi support, as well as GPS navigation.  As for the N85 (pictured above), it is meant to replace the N81, and it also has some terrific features as well.  The camera here ranges from two to five-megapixels, and it also features a 2.6-inch AMOLED display, 28 hours of audio playback, GPS navigation and geotagging support.  You would think that with these phones soon to be released, that we would have a price on them.  Unfortunately, we don’t.  I suppose we’ll have to wait to see how Nokia does their “London Calling”.  Via [electronista] Keep up with the latest gadget goodness! Panasonic’s latest 103-inch 1080p plasma: step aside oil barons, this one’s headed home
by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 3:40AM Hard to believe but Panasonic just introduced its third generation 103-inch plasma just in time for IFA. Model TH-103PZ800 adds a few more HDMI (4x 1080/24p) jacks with Deep Color and x.v.Color support, a smattering of tuners, a 10,000:1 contrast, and VIERA Link compatibility to ease the connectivity of all your like-minded, Panny gear. In fact, this set looks primed for home-use, not just the businesses and trust-funders targeted by Panny’s previous monster sets. Ready for order on August 26th (shipping in September for Japan) for ¥5.6 million or a bit more than $50k — a steep, $20k price drop since February.
