Orange paying actors to line up for the iPhone 3G in Poland
by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 21st 2008 at 5:46PM The iphone 3G hits 20 more countries tomorrow, and while we doubt the hype will match the craziness of launch day, that’s not stopping Orange from trying to re-create the madness in Poland — it’s hiring “dozens” of actors to line up at 20 stores around the country to “drum up interest.” Yeah, that’s just sad — especially since there aren’t any real customers in line at Polish T-Mobile stores, which is also carrying the phone. Good luck selling phones to your own actors, fools — when will these companies ever learn?PS.- That’s a pic from launch day in Chicago — any Polish readers have a shot of the actors for us? Maria Sharapova and Canon to give away diamond-clad SD1100 ISs
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 21st 2008 at 5:31PM Maria Sharapova has already had her greatness spread over a number of Motorola handsets, but now the tennis queen is partnering up with long-time associate Canon in order to make five lucky individuals extraordinarily happy. As part of an elaborate marketing scheme, Canon and Maria (but mostly Canon) are cranking up a contest in which five Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS’s are given away. But these aren’t just any SD1100 ISs — these are diamond-encrusted editions worth around $12,000 apiece. (Read the full post about ‘Maria Sharapova and Canon to give away diamond-clad SD1100 ISs’…)

Sprint lowers Phone-As-Model pricing from $50 to $15, conditions apply
Sprint has just lowered their Phone-As-Modem pricing from $50 a month all the way down to $15 a month. Sounds like you are going to see some huge savings, right? Well not so fast, because as you would expect with anything that sounds a little good to be true, there are some conditions that will apply. To begin with you need to have a Power Vision phone with connection capabilities, which is going to limit your phone choices a bit, but that is not it. In addition to the phone, you also need to be subscribed to another Sprint data plan, such as the Pro Pack that is going for $30 a month. Now instead of the huge savings that you were thinking, you are saving just $5 a month. (Read the full post about ‘Sprint lowers Phone-As-Model pricing from $50 to $15, conditions apply’…)

Dell’s Inspiron 910 caught in the wild, and its running Ubuntu

Dell’s Inspiron 910 caught in the wild, and its running Ubuntu
Based on previous leaked images we are likely to believe this is the real deal, because after all, isn’t it a rule that these always be blurry and slightly hard to look at. Of course we cannot confirm if these are truly the real deal, but deep down we hope they are. Based on these images, this model seems a little nicer than the last leaked images, for one it does not seem nearly as shiny and prone to show every little flaw. However the keyboard does seem to be missing a few things, notably the function keys. Keep reading to check out another image of the Inspiron 910, along with another image of the configuration screen… Via [Engadget] Keep up with the latest gadget goodness! Acer offering back-to-school pricing on the Aspire One netbook
I guess with all the available options for netbooks, you have to stand out in some way. Acer has decided to make their attempt by lowering the price of the Aspire One just in time for the back-to-school shopping rush. The price drops are pretty nice and are offering quite a bit of savings. The Windows XP based model has been lowered from $399 down to $349 and the Linpus Lite based model has been lowered from $379 down to just $329. Of course, considering the Aspire One has already gotten quite a few good reviews, this just makes it a little more appealing. Intel shows off wireless charging

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Tired of all those chargers for all of your gadgets?  Cameras, cell phones, PSPs, laptops, everything has a power cord even if it’s portable.  In a few years that may be a thing of the past (well, maybe more than a few years).  Intel has been researching wireless charging technology and has shown it off for the first time.

Intel’s system uses two metal rings connected by to a power amplifier.  The two rings transmit power to any device close to it.  Sure, it’s not entirely efficient (the numbers seem to say it’s only about 75 percent efficient when transmitting 60 watts two feet), but it given time that could improve.  The Wired article assures that the technology is safe for humans, so that’s a plus.

Google and Verizon in talks for cell phone searches

Google and Verizon in talks for cell phone searches
With Android hitting later this year, you’d think Google would be content with it’s place in the cellular phone market.  Apparently they aren’t satisfied with just an OS.  A Reuters report shows that Google is in talks with Verizon to use Google as the default search engine for Verizon cell phones. This probably seems like a small move at first.  But, the plan as of now apparently means adding a Google search bar to the homepage of Verizon phones.  It’s not clear what that could mean, but if it is the main screen on the phone, it could make for quite a few extra dollars for Verizon when people with data plans accidentally use it.  The plan would also have Google and Verizon sharing revenue from search ads when it is used on a Verizon phone. Tokidoki mini-laptop

Tokidoki mini-laptop
Don’t you just hate it when you fall in love with a gadget that’s not available in this country? I’m a big fan of tokidoki, as faithful readers already know, and love my beautiful handbag, jewelry, belt buckle, and other accessories designed by Simone Legno. But this limited edition tokidoki, PC - exclusive for the Japanese market and which can only be purchased on Fujitsu’s website - is killing me. Somewhat consoling is the fact that it was created for the “This One’s For The Children of Sichuan” charity auction to benefit children affected by the disastrous earthquake that struck the Sichuan Province of China in May of this year. Horizon intros Bio Energy Discovery Kit for some fuel cell education

Horizon intros Bio Energy Discovery Kit for some fuel cell education
by Donald Melanson, posted Aug 21st 2008 at 12:43PMHorizon Fuel Cell Technologies certainly has plenty more ambitious fuel cell products in the works, but it looks like it’s not leaving any potential opportunity to make itself known untapped, with it now introducing the education-minded Bio Energy Discovery Kit to spread the fuel cell word to students and educators alike. According to the company, the kit is actually the “fuel cell industry’s first direct ethanol product,” which means it’s able to take plain water and any household alcohol (like diluted vodka) and, in this case, provide enough power to run a fan non-stop for days on end. WatchScale attempts to become the new calculator watch
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 21st 2008 at 9:09AM Move over, Casio Databank (and similar) — a formidable opponent just rolled into the ring. While the aforementioned timepiece has been the geek watch of choice for years now, Jennings’ WatchScale is all set to give it a real run for the money. This wristwatch not only displays the time in brilliantly blue fashion, but it also weighs lightweight objects (up to 300-grams) with an accuracy of 0.1-grams. We know, you’re already bracing for a quadruple-digit (pre-decimal) price tag, but there’s no need for worry — after all, you can procure your own for just $17.90.[Thanks, Nate]Read PermalinkEmail this75 CommentsFiled under: Misc.
