Intempo unveils iPod-lovin’ RDi-W / Fusion speaker systems
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 20th 2008 at 10:39AM What can we say? Intempo has launched a new pair of ipod-compatible speaker systems, and unless you’re somehow just entering the market for one in the latter half of 2008, chances are you’re already yawning. Nevertheless, the RDi-W (pictured) does distinguish itself somewhat by including support for DAB and wireless internet radio, and there’s a 30-watt internal amplifier to kick out the jams. The much drabber Fusion keeps things small and simple by offering up just 25-watts of power and DAB / FM tuners. Expect the couple to sashay into e-tailers next month for £169.99 ($316) / £99 ($184).Read - RDi-WRead - FusionPermalinkEmail this5 CommentsFi (Read the full post about ‘Intempo unveils iPod-lovin’ RDi-W / Fusion speaker systems’…)

Samsung Instinct Review - MobileTechReview
MobileTechReview has a review of the Samsung Instinct and writes, “The Samsung Instinct has a 2 megapixel camera with a fixed focus lens. There’s a self portrait mirror but no flash. The camera uses the entire screen as the viewfinder and there are very few settings– a cue Samsung shouldn’t have taken from the iPhone. The phone takes images at max resolution, 1600 x 1200, and resizes them down if you send them as MMS (Picture Mail). There are no settings for white balance, effects or anything else. Likewise the camcorder has no settings other than a button to switch between MMS length (2 minutes or less) or for saving locally (length limited by available storage).” Read more about the Samsung Instinct. New video technique marries video and stills improving images

New video technique marries video and stills improving images
Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a special effects technique that marries digital stills with video footage in order to overcome bad exposure and missing detail in the video image. Called Space/Time Fusion, the technique works by taking video footage that’s blurry or overexposed and substituting the digital information with that of a properly exposed and focused still shots of the same subject. The technique can also remove unwanted subjects or objects like they were never there. And all done automatically thanks to an algorithm in the Space Time Fusion software which analyzes both video and digital imagery and then marries them together at similar points. RIAA forces Muxtape downtime

RIAA forces Muxtape downtime
We’ve already heard about the problems Pandora has been having with the upcoming RIAA royalty structure.  But we’re already starting to see the effects on smaller internet radio sites.  Muxtape’s main page hold’s a sad message reading; “Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.” While Muxtape insists it’s not closed for good, this can start to get scary for many people fairly soon.  As the RIAA starts tightening its grip, more services may be forced to shut down or start charging people to use the service.  It’s hard not to think that the RIAA is basically shooting itself in the foot with these new rules.  Online radio, while not exactly all that profitable, is a great way to find new music you may like but never heard before.  That could potentially lead to more record sales.  It’d be nice if maybe instead of basically trying to shut down internet radio, the RIAA tried working with it.  Or maybe the RIAA should hire some younger consultants on the matter, maybe some people just out of college that know how people like listening to their music in the internet age. M2E Recharges as You Walk

M2E Recharges as You Walk
Even as I write this report, I have my cellular phone plugged into the wall. Usually, I forget to charge it, and I have to milk one bar on the battery indicator all day. Like me, I’m sure you have been in predicaments where you desperately needed to charge your cellular phone, but don’t have time to hang around a power outlet for the next few hours. Fortunately, there is a solution. What if you could just charge your phone with the simple action of walking? This is the basic principle of M2E Power. I realize that the picture of this product (currently a concept) isn’t much to look at, but there is a lot going inside. It works with a miniature magnet passing through a coil, which captures the lowest emissions of kinetic energy. (Read the full post about ‘M2E Recharges as You Walk’…)

Women and the “CSI effect”

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

If there’s one job I couldn’t do in a million years, it’s forensic scientist. I get grossed out wiping up food stains, so despite my grudging admiration for Sara Sidle, there’s no way I could hold onto my nerve (and my cookies) for long enough to swab human fluids.

But it seems a lot of women are a lot less wussy than I am. In fact, USA today reports that perhaps in part due to shows like CSI, more women are entering the field than ever before: 74% of recent graduates in forensic science are female, up from 60% just six years ago.

This is one of the few areas of science to contain a high proportion of female graduates, which is great. But it’s also one of the lowest-paid science-related jobs…

I’m scared - driving while watching iPhone video projected on windshield

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Okay, we all multi-task to some degree while driving. I have a GPS mounted on my windshield, for instance, though I don’t play around with the settings while driving. And we all know people who text on their cell phones from behind the wheel (don’t do it!).
