Nikon announces Coolpix S60 - touchscreens for all
Nikon has announced yet another point and shoot camera, this time the Coolpix S60.  The S60 sports a massive 3.5-inch touchscreen, which controls almost the entire camera’s functionality; save for the power and shutter, both of which are controlled by dedicated buttons.  The interface is optimized for easy use - a minimal amount of large icons on the screen, and so on.  The 5X zoom is also controlled by onscreen buttons.  The device is outfitted with numerous settings, like portrait zooming or auto scene selection, which all can be activated with one press to the screen, making the touchscreen truly easy to use. Addonics Portable Dual Drive enclosure lets you RAID on the go
by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 12:23PM We’ve seen a couple tiny / portable RAID enclosures, but Addonics’s new Portable Dual Drive enclosure is the smallest we’ve seen so far, with a compact stacked design that allows you to easily swap drives. The eSATA / USB 2.0 box supports RAID 0/1 and several other disk configs, and Addonics is hyping compatibility with SATA-to-CF adapters that’ll let you build a crazy SSD RAID. InPhase Technologies finally delivers… layoffs
by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 2:34PM We’ve been hearing about InPhase Technologies’ Tapestry 300GB holographic storage disks since 2005, but we’ve never actually seen the product in action, even though the company has been promising ship dates the whole time — and now it looks like we might never get the chance, as the company has apparently laid off “roughly half” of its workforce. The cuts are reportedly blamed on CEO Nelson Diaz refusing to listen to roadmaps from his engineers and setting unrealistic schedules — hmm, you think that might be a problem after nearly three years of missed launch dates? There’s still a chance we’ll actually see these things make it out of the labs, but we’re not hold (Read the full post about ‘InPhase Technologies finally delivers… layoffs’…)

New robotic arm promises to mind Newton’s third law

New robotic arm promises to mind Newton’s third law
by Donald Melanson, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 4:04PM Don’t you hate it how simply moving a robotic arm in a microgravity environment can produce enough negative reaction forces to alter a spacecraft’s orientation? Well, a group of researchers from Cornell University have now devised a new type of robot arm that they say could make that pesky problem a thing of the past. To do that, they’ve employed a device known as a control-moment gyroscope (or CMG) instead of a motor to control the arm’s joints, which not only reduces the amount energy requied to move the arm, but lets it move faster as well. As you can see above, they’ve already tested the arm on board NASA’s famous Vomit Comet, but there’s no indication just yet as to when or if the arm will actually see action in space. Green lingerie
We have green everything today, from gadgets to re-usable shopping bags, but organic lingerie? Eco-Chick (”Because Mother Earth is a Women”) turned us on to this French company, g=9.8, which makes the first underwire bra that’s made from recycled pine fibers. Starre, who runs Eco-Chick and is just as glamorous as the name implies, swears it’s comfortable. Check out the lovely French site, buy some pretty under things and feel good about sustainable development. That’s what we call a Win/Win. Fusion HG6: Exercise For Home Theater Addicts
Honestly, I don’t even know where to start with this thing. It’s the sort of product that just makes me think “Wow, this is something I could actually integrate into everyday life.” It’s something I could easily get used to having right in my grasp. And yet, the price is far beyond the range of my current finances, as it probably is for most of you, but, come on, let’s talk about how awesome it would be to have some extra money to spend on this fitness super gadget. The Fusion HC6 seems to be the ultimate home gym. Incorporating almost any possible exercise into a streamline design, not too mention a totally out-of-this-world add-on option of a built-in media center. Eee PC officially goes mainstream, now available at Target

Eee PC officially goes mainstream, now available at Target
Asus and Target have just announced that the Eee PC will now be available both online and also at 150 of their retail locations. I suppose this news should come as little surprise, because Asus seems to be spreading the Eee brand so thin with new models, that it now being available at Target almost seems normal. I think what will end up being more surprising is just how many customers will see this as a good idea. As a geek, I love my Eee PC, and I have shown it to many non-geeks who loved it, but majority of them also stated that without having used mine, they would never have purchased one. HTC to ship one millionth Touch Diamond this month
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 8:30AM We know how much those suits love to hit wild targets they set without any real understanding of the future, so we’re pretty sure at least one or two are getting the kudos of their life with this one. Earlier this year, HTC boldly predicted that it would move a staggering two million Touch Diamond handsets before 2009 dawned, and according to a new report, it’ll ship the one millionth unit sometime next week. With Sony Ericsson having all sorts of difficulties moving its mid- to high-end mobiles, one may wonder if HTC really can sell another million before December 31st. But we have all ideas the looming Sprint / Verizon launches will be all the help it needs to call (Read the full post about ‘HTC to ship one millionth Touch Diamond this month’…)
